Toll Roads

Toll Roads

Yes, there are toll roads in Australia
Not all but some Highways, tunnels and bridges are subject to tolls. Usually the toll roads are easy to spot as signs stating ‘toll way‘ , ‘toll road‘ or just ‘TOLL‘  in yellow letters on blue or green ground.

How to pay toll?
Rental car companies oftentimes offer an option which covers toll.  In this case you won’t have to worry.  But make sure it is covered and you got it in writing. Otherwise you will have to make your own arrangements to register the car or camper to ensure you are paying the tolls. To do so you you will need the registration number (rego), your license plate number and a credit card. Toll way payments can be made via phone, the internet or also via an app.  Usually you will have 3 days time to make a payment after using a toll road. But buying a pass upfront can be cheaper. But make sure you register and make the payment as late payments lead to service fees, interest and fines. Unpaid tolls will be enforced with loss of license, loan collection and ceasing of property. More information on fines and how to contest a fine here.

Tipp:
There is a new toll operator called Linkt . The App from Linkt is available for  IOS as Android, and it allows to make online payments for tolls all over Australia.  The Linkt Website provides very good information on tolls in all states. Also pretty handy is the toll-calculator which allows you to know upfront how much you will be in for on your next part of your trip.

What’s an e-tag?

E-tags are for frequent users of toll roads in one area. They are small transponders which can be stuck to your windscreen or dashboard. E-tags communicate with the toll e-infrastructure so trips are charged directly to the bank account or credit card fr the user. n
